Located between the cities of Touros and Rio do Fogo, the beach of Perobas is a world apart. A world of coconut palms follows its water front and fascinates the visitor with its beautiful difference, a symbiosis of tones of the blue sea and the green of the vegetation. The way the coconut trees are, along the sea side, is a different attraction, a tree that leaves the conventional of its neighbors to form a whim of nature. The rectilinear trunk makes a true angle of 90º of pure beauty and creativity.
It is a phenomenon that it needs to be analyzed by the botanists, for its rarity. One could think that it was the same cause that provoked the beautiful anomaly in the Gogó of the Ema, in Maceió, but it does not make sinuosas curves. Its curve is abrupt, almost straight line, exactly. The oldest inhabitants do not know how to explain that the coconut palm suffered this transformation. When people first noticed it, it was already that way, a little crippled, said a fisherman surprised with our admiration.
For the more romantic, the case of the coconut palm was of a love not corresponded. It was impassioned by the waves of the sea and was in this direction it followed. When he (the tree) felt it had to go and to come with the sea, (ebb tide and high water), it decided to follow that route, but already it was there too late and it was divided between the sky and the sea. The 90º coconut palm passes unobserved to the eyes of the natives of Perobas and the tourism authorities of Touros. But it is a curiousity that it needs to be studied, to be preserved and indicated in the tourism guides.
When you visit Perobas to see the different coconut palm, note its location: It is in the first line next to the water front, between the bar of Vozinho and the Restaurant of Marco Pólo. Do not forget to take a camera. It is like a beautiful e vain person.
Perobas is a small beach, with a population of less than a thousand inhabitants and only now is starting to be discovered by tourism. Until recently it was an exclusive hideaway of the veranistas. A calm cove and an open sea of soft waves are its characteristics, complemented by the coconut palms, now preserved and defended by the native population, since it serves as a symbol of the beach and is an economic source for its inhabitants.
One detail that makes the difference is its occupation of the ground and that the houses, either of the natives or veranistas, and the small bars and restaurants respect the law of navy land, which only allows construction on a land 33 meters or more from the sea.
The beach belongs to the city of Touros, seven kilometers from the city, but also it has many links with the city of Rio do Fogo, as it is only three kilometers and only a river separates them. The explanation that the natives have for the name of its beach is that, in the old days, the prevailing underbrush consisted of peroba wood that was devastated, since its wood was used for cabinet making.
Life passes without haste in Perobas. The activities of subsistence are fishing in the sea in boats and the shore nets, when the nets are used for the shrimp. By the way, this is one of the few places where more salt water shrimp is captured.
Besides the quality the size is large. The harvest of the coconut also represents a major activity for the community. Perobas is a great source that supplies the consumption of green coconuts in Natal. The shipment of the product for Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo is common. The natives of Perobas are feeling that the moment is of transformation. The life style of the old times is arriving at the end, mainly during the months of December through February and many people already are looking for land to invest.
