A tourist destination that is starting to consolidate. This is the best definition for Touros, a city of Rio Grande do Norte of the North that is privileged by its geographic localization, the meeting of the north and east Brazilian coasts. For this condition, Touros has the slogan as the Esquina (corner) of Brazil or Esquina of the South America. This is a reality in both cases. A 40 meters of height lighthouse signals this fact
The great investors in tourism already are discovering the filão (gold) that is there for being panned. Its beaches, with immense coconut groves, are starting to be scenes of international level resorts or hotels. The site of the city is distant from Natal, through the BR-101, total asphalted, only 89 kilometers. For being the city oldest in the region where some had been abandoned, Touros occupies a leadership in the economic activity of the region.
The first Portuguese navigators, who had come, in August of 1501, had chosen a beach of the potiguar coast to place a landmark of their discovery. This beach is less than 40 kilometers distance of the site of the city and is known by the historians as the Marco de Touros.
By the way, a good program for a visitor in Touros is to rent a buggy or vehicle with four wheel traction and to visit the place where Brazil received the seal of Portuguese possession. He will not see the original landmark, as it can be found in the Forte Dos Reis Magos, in Natal.
In the passeio, if one does, you should visit the lighthouse Farol do Calcanhar, the tallest in Latin America, and the monument of Oscar Niemeyer also called Landmark Zero of the BR-101, the highway that goes from Touros, in Rio Grande do Norte, until Torres, in Rio Grande do Sul.
It is not necessary to say that the set of falésias (cliffs), to the south of the cove that fronts the city of Touros gave origin to the name of the city. As in the face, or more necessarily as in the head. The falésias remind one of heads of black bulls and are called Tourinhos. The discovery of this artistic work of the nature is conferred to the navigating colonials that as they were approaching the coast, had sighted this great falésia that gave the impression that it had been sculptured in form of the head of a black bull.
The city grew from the tourinhos and today the urbanized edge is the point of the city. The Burburinho starts before the 5:00 in the morning, when the fishing open the sails of their boats and rafts in route to the sea.
Later, those walking the calçadão remind that it is the hour of taking care of their health. This movement of a swim in the sea and the barraquinhas (small bars or huts) with cooling, coconut water and cold beer starts to at 9:00 and goes on until 15:00 hours
The waterfront closes on the arrival of the rafts and boats. It is the hour to check the results of the fishermen, as they clean their fresh fish, on land. The population decides to choose and buy the fish that, most of the time, goes direct to the pan and the table for their supper.
As all cities of the interior, the nights of Touros are calm and the parties on the weekend only break the routine, In the sea edge, full moon nights, the spectacle is that of the nature.
In the main square of Touros it does not surprise you to discover that the Igreja Matriz (principle church) and one small fort with cannons are side by side. They are part of the history of the city, since the participation of Touros in the history of colonial Brazil was of much importance. The Portuguese cannons, three in the total, point with respect to the sea. They had been used in the innumerable fights between the Indians, Portuguese and Dutch, in the defense of that Atlantic coast. Also the Igreja Matriz is part of the historic image of the city. It was constructed in 1800, therefore it is 206 years old, to shelter the image of the padroeiro saint, Senhor.Bom Jesus dos Navegantes, keeping the originality of its origin. The festa of Bom Jesus dos Navegantes is one of the most important events in the religious and tourist calendar of Rio Grande do Norte. It happens on day 1º of January.
After the night of reveillon (New Years night) the city prepare for the great procession of the navigators, when dozens of boats and fishing rafts follow the small cockle-boat of the Bom Jesus. In terms of popular culture, the population of Touros likes to preserve the traditional 'folguedos' of beach side life, as the Lapinha, folkloric dances, started in 1920, to homage of singular form the birth of the Boy Jesus (Natal do Menino Jesus). Another preserved cultural identity in the area of the folklore is the Zambelê dance that in the party times demonstrates its ballet in the dunes of the beach of the Ponta do Calcanhar
