A beach that reminds one of the superior part of a heart as seen from above on the falésias. This is the landscape that causes a stretch of the coast of Pipa to receive the name Praia do Amor (Beach of the Love). Surrounding this has appeared some legends that involve passionate couples, remade loves, unexpected meetings that become permanent.
Nobody knows just how the name appeared, but, with certainty it was from someone that saw the beach from the falésias during high water and was effected passionately; at that moment the most favorable time to perceive the contour of the beach forming a heart.
To arrive at the Praia do Amor there is two ways. The first one is to follow the main beach from Pipa, direction to the south, but with the low tide. This way is cut by rocks, but it is not that difficult. The second option is to go down the falésias with its fifteen meters of height. There are some points of access, also from stairs from some hotels. An there are those who prefer rappeling to go down or to go up.
On account of its waves, it one is of the most frequented by the surfers (surfistas) who find excellent conditions for radical maneuvers there. By the way, the both of national and regional surf championships of surf frequently conducted here. It was through the surfistas that the small fishing village started to be known, in the 1960s of the Twentieth Century.
The Praia do Amor, which at that time was called beach of the Drowned, did not attract attention, even from of the natives of the small fishing village. The ‘summer people’ (veranistas), the majority from the neighboring city of Goianinha, were few and they arrived there via a dirt road that also passed for Tibau do Sul. Pipa is limited to a single central street, on the high cliffs, linked with the church square for a slope. Tourism or tourists were not known, per sie, in the dictionary of the region.
The surfistas had been arriving and the word of mouth (boca-a-boca) of its potentiality was happening by the youth of Natal. Until an entrepreneur, Alonso Bezerra Filho decided to invest in Pipa and constructed a small hotel, on top of the falésia.
From there, when the beach tide is rising that it was perceived that it formed a heart, a heart of the love. In that instant the Praia do Batismo was being baptized and it started to transform into one of the most frequented of the Brazilian coast.
Today, along the water front of the Praia do Amor the hotels have installed small structures covered with straw to take care of their guests, the waiters go up and down the staircases bringing cooling or cold beers (cervejinha), regional fruit juices and delicious tidbits based on fish, lobster, siri, shrimp and crabs. At times lunch itself is served by the side of the beach;
There are various options of lodging above the Praia do Amor and a infinity in Pipa. The e gastronomical variety is famous for international dishes, with prominence for the Italian pasta, the Portuguese peixadas and bacalhoadas, French crepes or Spanish paelha. And, if you look for it, there is also the gaucho barbecue, Minas ‘tutu’, the Carioca feijoada, Bahia vatapá or the’carne do sol’ with ‘feijão verde’ (sun dried meat with green beans), characteristic of the potiguar culinary.
The praia de Pipa is 60 kilometers from Natal and 80 kilometers from João Pessoa, the access totally is asphalted, from BR-101, in the city of Goianinha. For those that prefer to arrive in a four wheel drive vehicle, there is a beautiful passage by raft over the lagoon of the Guaraíras. For those from João Person, beyond Goianinha, they have a prettier access. This starts in the city of Canguaretama, passing by the Bar of the Cunhaú and Sibaúma, beaches separated by a small river that is crossed by raft.
The Praia do Amor is a shelter of peace in the agitated Pipa and its coconut palms, falésias and cliffs and the strong waves are a beautiful complement to the potiguar coast
